Flights of Foundry is upon us – it starts in just under 2 hours!!! For those who don’t know Flights of Foundry is one of my all-time favorite conventions for creatives, featuring online programming for 3 days straight for writers, translators, artists, and more!
Flights of Foundry is run by Dream Foundry, a nonprofit dedicated to helping new writers and other creatives from around the world access resources and professional networks to help them succeed. FoF is Dream Foundry’s largest fundraiser (please donate to support their mission!), and this year’s event starts in just a couple of hours!!!

My schedule:
Friday (today!!!):
- “The Death of Truth is the Ultimate Victory of Evil: Andor Season 2″ @ 7:00pm EDT on Friday, September 26 (today!)
[Panelists: Stephen Grenade, Arturo Serrano, Monica Louzon, & Victor Manibo. Moderator: Mia Tsai]
We’ll be discussing the Emmy-winning Andor Season 2, music, rebellion, destiny, everyday heroes, plot arcs, diversity, sacrifice, community, and more!
Saturday:
- “Speculative Fiction in Translation” @ 12:00pm EDT on Saturday, September 27
[Presenter: Monica Louzon (aka, yours truly!)]
I’ll be giving a solo presentation about how I became a translator, why speculative fiction in translation matters, a brief overview history of speculative fiction translated to English, what shapes what gets translated, a few Spanish-language speculative fiction anthologies I’ve really enjoyed, the challenges that come with translating speculative fiction, and resources for readers, writers, and translators. - “The Heart and Soul of Translation” @ 2:00pm EDT on Saturday, September 27
[Panelists: CD Covington, Camilia Xerez de Freitas Balbi, Jana Bianchi. Moderator: Monica Louzon]
I’ll be moderating a discussion among translators about what human translators bring to the table vs. machine translations, and why we still desperately need humans to continue translating books, comics, films, television series, and more. We’ll talk about pros and cons of removing communication barriers with machine translations, and how that impacts human translators.
Sunday:
- “Workshop: Mini-Zines” @ 9:00am EDT on Sunday, September 28
[Presenter: Monica Louzon]
I’ll be running a workshop in which panelists will make mini-zines! Bring at least one piece of paper, some water or scissors, a writing utensil, and a micro idea (a list, a story, a mini essay, a minicomic, stick figures, etc.)! After discussing what mini-zines are, what you can use them for, how to duplicate them, and why I think they’re cool, we’ll make mini-zines together! - “Let’s Talk About Zines” @ 11:00am EDT on Sunday, September 28
[Panelists: Christiane Knight and Monica Louzon]
Christiane and I will be discussing what zines are, what makes them unique, and why we love them! We’ll also touch on how creators can use zines for self-promotion, to share ideas, challenge the status quo of publishing, and how/why people create zines. (I’ll be showing off a few of my favorites from my collection!)
Hope to see you there!!!
